My Life History

I was born on the 27th of September 1946 in Lower Saxony – Niedersachsen, Germany.

From the early childhood, there is a longing in my mind to become a boatman on inland waters like my father and grandfather, but, unfortunately, my parents were against it.

After surviving Drethem Grammar School in 11/1960, I started as an apprentice electrician in the hope to find my way later on.

However, after passing the apprenticeship certification exam in 4/1964, I severely injured my lower left leg in a traffic accident.

As a result, all my dreams about to become a boatman were washed down the drain immediately!

Depending on my leg, I also failed to pass the Military Service Medical Examination, so I was not called again.

Nevertheless, after my health being restored so far, I left my master and his training firm in 11/1965.

Looking for employment, I moved on to the City of Hamburg, where I found a job at a shipyard from 12/1965 till 08/1968.

Because of continuing to make a living, from 09/1968 till 03/1970 I accepted to do rotated shift work on a smelter, which produces copper and lead in large quantities.

As an electrician, you very often need to stay at the same place without moving your feet one single inch, as sitting down and rest in between was not tolerated.

On this occasions, my former wounded leg was nearly killing me! As time keeps passing by, I was seriously thinking about another profession.

With the help of a good friend and a well-known orthopedist, I was able to join a professional retraining.

Without delay, I left the smelter and started my training in office machines and electronics from 04/1970 till 03/1972 and I completed my certification exams successfully.

The future seems to look bright first, but not in reality!

As a matter of fact, nobody seems to want me. The stigma of being rehabilitated was my daily experience. I was feeling like a prisoner just released from jail.

With pain and misery, I managed it to join an office machine cleaning service from 03/1972 till 05/1972.
Not being happy at all, I one day spotted an advertisement in which the German Burroughs Subsidiary offered a Job in the City of Hamburg, asking for a letter of application.

Speaking, this was the most important milestone in my working life because Burroughs offered a fair chance to me!

In fact, quite a lot of tasks I was expected to fulfil to meet their requirements. However, in 06/1972, I joined as a Burroughs Trainee with a half year of employment probation period included.

Having been promoted as a Junior and Senior Field Engineer first, I also became a Technical Product Instructor later on.

When Burroughs was about to leave Germany in 09/1979, one month later, I moved to CalComp, the former California Computer Cooperation, dealing with CAD Equipment in particular.

To sum up, I was busy in CalComp from 10/1079 till 01/1995 as a Customs Service Engineer.
On 02/1995, a transfer of undertakings was initiated.

Worst of all, the whole CalComp Business was taken over by an East German Company, a Successor of the Peoples Brown-Coal Strip Mining Combine, situated near the City of Leipzig.

It was the 31st of October in 1998 when German Youth Mania and German Ageism brought my professional career abruptly to an end.

Just because of my date of birth, I never got a chance to get hired again!

Here and now, I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to all my former Customers who counted on me during the years I was busy with them!

When looking back at days gone by, thankfully I remember all the kind and friendly people I happened to meet in Germany, in the US and the UK.

Providing Help and A Good Service Again, That Are My Goals I Would Like To Achieve In The Future!

Yours faithfully,

Hans
